Factors That Contribute to Acne

What’s the worst thing that can occur to a teenager? Ask this question to teens, and the answer is common enough- acne. How does one develop acne, and how does one get rid of it? Acne has always been perceived as a stigma which may bring about social isolation and depression.

It has been theorized that acne may be caused by one’s hormones- especially the male hormone called testosterone. This hormone is triggered during puberty, when large amounts of the hormone are distributed all over one’s body. In women, acne can be triggered by hormonal imbalances as well, especially during menstruation.

Another theory states that the real culprit behind acne is stress, because it brings about a greater release of hormones in the adrenal glands. Sebaceous glands may further worsen the situation by acting as a secondary agent to hormones. In some people, the production of sebum can also lead to acne growth. When combined with skin bacterial growth, external rubbing, and dead skin cell shedding, the result is a bad acne breakout.

Some medications can also increase one’s chances in developing acne. Such medications involve anabolic steroids, halogens, lithium, barbiturates, and androgens. Too much exposure to chlorine can lead to a severe acne condition called chloracne.

Over the years, many theories have been proposed regarding acne growth and development. The most famous among these tells that one’s diet is a deciding factor when it comes to acne. There is even a common misconception wherein people equate oily foods as with having an oily face, and ultimately, more acne.

Science has proven that there is no relationship whatsoever between one’s diet and one’s acne problem. Teenagers should not be discouraged from eating food such as pizza, chocolates, and candy bars just because they have been said to contribute to acne. That is a myth which many people still believe in today.

Hygiene has also been pointed out as a deciding factor in acne. It is a common misconception that bad personal hygiene leads to more acne. In fact, too much cleaning and facial scrubbing can even worsen the acne problem. Products easily bought over the counter can also worsen acne rather than eradicate it.

Do Staph Infections Cause Acne Breakouts?

There is no simple answer to this question. All acne is caused by some sort of infection. It can be due to clogged pores becoming infected, or an infection under the skin that can cause acne on the surface.

Staph infections can manifest themselves on the skin, in the form of eruptions that are pus-filled and look like boils. But, if the eruptions are smaller, they can be more like zits or pimples.

Typically, more than one eruption will be present, and they can be present in one or more areas on the body. They can be painful and very unsightly.

These eruptions are different than normal acne in that they are not caused by pores clogging and becoming infected. Therefore, normal acne treatments like topical Benzoyl peroxide will not be effective in treating the breakout.

If you have a staph infection, you will need a doctor to diagnose it and treat it. Antibiotics MUST be prescribed in order to cure a staph infection.

How do you tell if you have a staph infection or if it is just regular acne? It can be hard to tell the difference, but some signs to look for are eruptions in places you do not normally get pimples. For instance, if you occasionally get pimples, but only on your chin, then suddenly you start to experience eruptions on your cheeks or forehead, it may not be simple acne.

Everyone’s skin is different, and only you know how your skin usually behaves. If you see signs that something unusual is happening, then you should check with your doctor to find out the cause.

Do Chocolate and Sex Really Cause Acne?

If you’ve heard it once you’ve probably heard it a dozen times – chocolate causes acne or sex causes acne. Or what about pizza, French fries, cola? There seams to be an endless supply of myths floating around about just what causes acne.

Whether it’s sex, chocolate, or specific foods – they are all myths. The only one that has some actual data backing it is high carb foods.

Once recent study in Australia did show that in rare cases high carb foods to cause acne flare ups in a small number of people. It’s believed this happens because of a spike in insulin levels that are needed to aid getting the glucose into the cells. This is referred to as insulin resistance and at the end of the day it is still tied to hormonal issues because these high levels of insulin result in higher levels of testosterone being produced, which can be linked to acne.

Let’s look at a few of these myths individually.

Myth #1 – Sex Causes Acne

Once you reach puberty your hormones change and you become sexually mature. It’s these same hormones that can be responsible for acne and that’s why the wrong conclusion has been reached about sex and acne.

Myth #2 – Chocolate Causes Acne

Just as other foods aren’t responsible for your acne chocolate isn’t either. And while some still believe French fries and other greasy foods are responsible for acne breakouts it’s simply not true. Although healthy eating can certainly reduce the number of breakouts and the severity.

Myth #3 – Dirty Skin Causes Acne

Just because you have acne doesn’t mean you don’t properly clean your skin. Sometimes the melanin in the black heads can make your skin look dirty. You can actually do more damage and cause an acne outbreak by scrubbing too hard or using products that are too harsh that strip away all of natural oils. When this happens your body compensates by producing larger volumes of oils on the rebound, which can cause pores to become clogged so, don’t make the mistake of stripping your skin of all its natural oils.

Myth #4 – Stress Causes Acne

Day to day stress does not cause acne, although some of the prescription medications used to treat depression and severe stress can cause acne flare-ups.

Myth #5 – There is No Treatment That Works to Cure Acne

That’s simply not true. While not every treatment will work on every person, a little trial and error and before long you should have a product that works well to reduce the acne even eliminate it. The lesson here is if one product doesn’t work then try another and another until you find one that does work.

There you have it. The truth about what doesn’t cause acne. Great news keep having sex and eating chocolate because it’s not what’s causing your acne.

Developing Acne from Pizza

It is a common misconception that eating pizza causes acne. This is not true. Food does not cause people to get acne. It may be true that certain foods will make existing acne worse in certain people. But food itself does not cause acne. It is important in general to eat a well balanced diet, but eating healthy won’t make a different in acne.

So why do we get acne? Skin plays an important role in our body makeup. It protects the body from infection, bacteria and viruses. It also keeps the body from getting too hot or too cold. It is the pores in our skin, specifically, that keeps us cool. Our pores release oil called sebum, which helps to cool off our body. Normally the oil simply evaporates. It is when this oil gets clogged with dirt that acne occurs. Dead skin cells, dirt and toxins in the air get into the pore and trap the oil. As a result, the pore swells up into a pimple.

Food may not be the reason behind our acne, but a lot of other things are. Generally, acne begins with puberty and ends in the late teens or early 20s. Some people, however, do not get acne until they are in their 20s. Genetics play an important role. If your parents had acne as a teenager, you are likely to have acne in your teens as well. Hormones and environment contribute as well. Hormones cause oil production to increase. As a result, there is more sebum in our pores, therefore a greater chance of the pores getting clogged. This explains why teenagers going through puberty usually have the most acne. As we get older, our bodies get better at handling the increased oil production and everything equalizes out. Girls tend to experience an increase in acne prior to menstruating. Menstruation is accompanied by an increase in hormones resulting in more sebum in the pores. Our immune system can also contribute to acne. Some people have a higher sensitivity to the bacteria that gets trapped in pores and therefore get more acne. Pollution in the air can be a factor in acne. Particles floating around in the air eventually settle on the skin, clogging the pores and causing acne.

There are many different ways to treat acne. The first most obvious way is to wash the face regularly. It is important to wash gently and not overdo it, as rough washing will only worsen the problem. Changing your pillowcase every night before bed will also help. The toxins from your body have been pressed into the old pillowcase and will wreak havoc on your face. Getting an air filter will help reduce the toxins in the air that can cause acne. Women should use oil free makeup to prevent acne. Most importantly, do not squeeze acne pimples, as this will only worsen them in most cases. Finally, if washing better and controlling environment does not help, it is recommended to see a dermatologist. A dermatologist can review your situation and provide treatment specific to your skin type.
